How to Test-Drive an EV: What to Check (Philippines)
By EVChargePH Team · October 27, 2026 · 6 min read

A test drive is where a shortlist becomes a decision, because it reveals what no brochure can: how the car actually feels to live with. With an EV there are a few specific things to pay attention to beyond the usual, like the regenerative braking feel and the charging setup. Go in with a checklist and you will learn far more than from a casual spin around the block.
Before you drive: the basics
Start with the fundamentals that matter in any car.
- Getting in and out, and the driving position. Comfortable and easy for you and your family?
- Space. Enough room for your passengers and cargo, including the boot?
- Visibility and controls. Can you see out well, and are the controls sensible rather than fiddly?
The EV-specific things to feel for
This is what makes an EV test drive different, so give these real attention.
- Instant response. Feel the smooth, immediate pull of instant torque when you accelerate. Most EVs feel effortless; see which suits you.
- Regenerative braking and one-pedal driving. Try the different regen settings. Strong one-pedal driving feels unusual at first but many drivers love it in traffic, as our guide to regenerative braking explains. Decide whether you like how the car slows when you lift off.
- Quietness and refinement. Notice how quiet it is, and whether that reveals any other noises you would not want to live with.
- Ride comfort. How does it handle rough roads and speed bumps?
Check the charging and tech
You will live with the charging setup daily, so look closely.
- The charging port. Where is it, and is it easy to reach at a charger? Confirm the connector type matches the network, which our EV connector guide covers.
- The screen and app. Is the infotainment responsive and easy to use? Does the car have an app for pre-cooling and charge limits?
- Charge settings. Can you set a charge limit, like 80% for daily use? Ask the dealer to show you.
Ask the right questions while you are there
A test drive is also your chance to get answers in person. Our list of questions to ask before buying an EV covers warranty, charging and after-sales. Combine the drive with those questions and you will have what you need to decide.
After the drive
Take a moment to reflect honestly. Did it fit your life, your family and your driving? If you are comparing two or three cars, drive them close together so the impressions are fresh. Then move through the rest of the process in our step-by-step guide to buying an EV.
Frequently asked questions
What should I focus on when test-driving an EV?
Beyond comfort and space, feel the instant response, try the regenerative braking and one-pedal settings, notice the quietness and ride, and check the charging port and tech. These EV-specific things shape daily ownership more than outright speed.
How long should an EV test drive be?
Long enough to try different roads, including some at speed and some stop-and-go, and to experiment with the regen settings. A quick spin around the block is not enough to judge how it will feel day to day.
Should I test-drive more than one EV?
Yes, if you are choosing between a few. Drive your shortlist close together so the impressions are fresh and comparable, which makes the decision much clearer.
What charging things should I check on a test drive?
Where the charging port is and whether it is easy to reach, that the connector matches the local network, and whether you can set a charge limit and use an app for things like pre-cooling. Ask the dealer to demonstrate.
