How EV charging time is calculated

The basic math is simple: the energy you need to add (in kWh) divided by the charger's power (in kW) gives the time in hours. The energy is your battery size times the percentage you're adding — so filling a 60 kWh battery from 20% to 80% means adding about 36 kWh. The real world is a little slower than the textbook number: AC charging loses roughly 10% to heat, and DC fast charging deliberately slows down as the battery fills, so a station rarely holds its peak speed for a whole session. This calculator factors both in for a realistic estimate.

The single biggest factor is the charger: a 7 kW home wall box, a 22 kW AC unit, and a 120 kW DC fast charger produce wildly different times for the same car. Your EV also has an onboard charger limit on AC, so plugging a 7 kW car into a 22 kW station won't charge it faster. How do you calculate EV charging time?+

The rough formula is: energy needed (kWh) divided by charger power (kW). Energy needed is your battery size multiplied by the percentage you want to add — so a 60 kWh battery going from 20% to 80% needs about 36 kWh. On a 7 kW home charger that is roughly 5–6 hours once you allow for charging losses. Our calculator does this for you and adjusts for AC losses and DC taper.

Why does DC fast charging slow down near 80%?+

To protect the battery, an EV reduces DC charging speed as it fills — the charging 'curve' tapers sharply after about 80%. That is why fast chargers quote a 10–80% time, and why on a road trip it is usually faster to charge to 80% and drive on than to wait for a full 100%.

How long does it take to charge an EV at home in the Philippines?+

Most Filipino owners charge overnight on a 7 kW Type 2 wall box. Topping up from about 20% to 80% on a typical 40–60 kWh battery takes roughly 4–7 hours — comfortably done while you sleep, at the residential Meralco rate.
