A full electric (BEV) almost always wins on running cost because electricity per kilometre is far cheaper than petrol — but it needs charging access. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is the middle ground: it runs on cheap electricity for everyday trips and switches to petrol for long provincial drives, so there is no range anxiety. What is the difference between HEV, PHEV and BEV?+
An HEV (hybrid) has a small battery it charges itself from the engine and braking — you never plug it in, and it always uses petrol. A PHEV (plug-in hybrid) has a bigger battery you charge from a plug for short all-electric trips, then a petrol engine for longer ones. A BEV (battery electric vehicle) has no engine at all and runs purely on electricity you charge.
Is a hybrid worth it if I can't charge at home?+
