What Affects Your EV's Range? (And How to Get More)
By EVChargePH Team · October 27, 2026 · 6 min read

The range you actually get from an EV is almost never the exact figure on the brochure, because real range depends on how and where you drive. Speed, air-conditioning, traffic, the load you carry, the terrain, and your driving style all push the number up or down. The good news is that most of these are within your control, so once you understand them, you can comfortably stretch every charge.
Why is my real range different from the brochure?
Official range figures come from standardised tests that cannot capture Philippine reality: our heat, our traffic, and constant aircon use. So treat the brochure number as a best case, not a promise. Our guide to WLTP vs real-world range explains why the gap exists, and the practical answer is simply to plan around a realistic figure with a buffer.
What uses the most energy?
A few factors have an outsized effect on range.
- Speed. Higher speeds use disproportionately more energy, so steady highway cruising drains faster than gentle city driving. This is the opposite of a petrol car, which is often thirstiest in traffic.
- Air-conditioning. Running the aircon uses energy, which matters in our climate, though the effect is often smaller than people fear. Our guide on whether aircon drains EV range digs in.
- Load. Carrying heavy cargo or a full load of passengers uses more energy.
- Terrain. Climbing hills uses energy, though some comes back on the way down through regenerative braking.
- Driving style. Hard acceleration and heavy braking waste energy; smooth driving conserves it.
How can I get more range?
You can meaningfully extend your range with simple habits, no special skill required.
- Ease off the speed. Smooth, moderate speeds on the highway stretch range the most.
- Drive smoothly. Gentle acceleration and early, gentle slowing let regenerative braking recover energy, as our guide to regenerative braking explains.
- Use aircon sensibly rather than blasting it, and park in the shade so the cabin starts cooler.
- Lighten the load by not carrying what you do not need.
- Keep tyres properly inflated, a small but real help.
Does range anxiety really matter?
Less than most first-timers expect, because knowing where you can charge beats a bigger battery. Once you understand what affects range and plan with a buffer, the number becomes predictable rather than worrying. Use the charging map to see your options, and our look at whether an EV is worth it puts range in the context of everyday ownership. For long drives, plan stops with our road trip routes.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my EV not reach its advertised range?
Because official figures come from standardised tests that cannot reflect real heat, traffic and aircon use. Expect real range to be lower, and plan around a realistic figure with a buffer rather than the brochure number.
What drains EV range the most?
Higher speeds have the biggest effect, followed by load, terrain and driving style. Air-conditioning uses energy too, though often less than people assume. Smooth, moderate driving is the single best way to extend range.
Does city or highway driving use more range?
Unlike a petrol car, an EV is often more efficient in the city, partly thanks to regenerative braking recovering energy when you slow. Steady high-speed highway driving tends to use range faster.
How do I avoid range anxiety?
Understand what affects range, plan with a buffer, and know where you can charge using the map. Familiarity removes the worry far more effectively than simply buying the longest-range car.
